Presentation by Steve Fleegal and Kathryn Cubert

We are excited to welcome our two speakers this month - Steve Fleegal,  Executive Director, Appalachia Ohio Alliance (AOA) and our own member Kathryn Cubert.  Below are the bios for our speakers.

Steve Fleegal, Executive Director, Appalachia Ohio Alliance (AOA)

The conservation of land and water resources is a critical need in the 21st century. Clean water, outdoor recreational opportunities, spaces for nature-based education, connection and observation, and the provision of sufficient, connected habitats to assure the sustainability of Ohio’s many native species – are some of the numerous conservation benefits that enhance the quality, livability and wellness of our communities.

AOA is the local non-profit conservancy that serves the land and water conservation needs of the Central Ohio / Scioto River Watershed region. AOA collaborates with many compatible groups to help achieve conservation objectives.

Steve will share his perspective on the positive impact conservation-oriented photography can have for organizations such as AOA.

Steve has 13 years of land and water conservation leadership experience. Prior to joining the land trust community Steve was the principal of a municipal consulting firm, responsible for planning, funding and implementing a wide range of public sector projects. A graduate of Virginia Tech, Steve has served on the board of directors of a half dozen non-profit organizations.

Kathryn Cubert, Photographer & Member of WBCC

I heard the news through a Facebook post. Monarchs by the hundreds, no thousands! were congregating in one location due to rain and wind as they migrated to Mexico. There was no chance I was missing out on such a sight. Off I went on a quest for images. Having planned on spending just a few hours at the site, I spent the entire day mesmerized by their beauty and hearing the stories of others who came to see and photograph them as well. The sight of so many at once has had an impact on my future endeavors and prompted me to become a conservation photographer.

Since the sighting of so many monarchs in October, 2018, I've worked to create imagery for two organizations that are focused on preservation of natural resources in Ohio. Appalachia Ohio Alliance and the Arc of Appalachia are both making huge strides in terms of conservation and I'm eager to continue supporting their efforts through my photography.

In addition to images published by AOA and the Arc, I've been published by the National Audubon Society, Bird Watchers Digest, the North American Nature Photography Association and Columbus Metro Parks. I've also been accepted into the juried Ohio State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition and Columbus Metro Parks Depth of Field exhibit at the McConnell Arts Center.

Please join us at 7pm for social time and 7:20pm for the meeting and presentation!
