(with Claire Wiedman, Adjunct at Columbus College of Art and Design)
Friday, September 06  4:30pm - 5:30pm Tremont Road Branch / Friends Theater
Registration: https://ualibrary.libnet.info/event/11254004
The Civil War marked one of the first widespread uses of photography to capture conflict.  Although the images can be challenging to view, they serve as a record of our troubled history and an important step in the birth of photojournalism. The images, largely produced by employees of Mathew Brady, changed hearts and minds in their own day and still compel strong emotions today.

Although we might think of this technology as too young to have a storied history, digital technology is older than we think and full of fascinating moments.    Take a journey through early practitioners and applications of digital technology, from its use in collage and compositing to its applications in aging children's photos for "Have You Seen Me?" pictures on milk cartons.

History of Pinhole Photography      (with Claire Wiedman)
Friday, November 08  4:30pm - 5:30pm  Tremont Road Branch / Friends Theater
Registration: https://ualibrary.libnet.info/event/11254076
Pinhole cameras are a primitive technology; so simple to create and utilize that you can make your own with items you already have at home.  Historically, pinhole cameras have been used by astronomy enthusiasts and scientists to track the path of the sun and celestial bodies over long periods of time, to witness events too slow for most cameras to record, and for artistic purposes. How can something so easy to create perform such amazing feats?

Preserving Your Family Photos
...with Local History and Genealogy Librarian Julie Callahan
Saturday, November 16 10:30am - 11:30am Tremont Road Branch / Friends Theater
Registration: https://ualibrary.libnet.info/event/11239747
Many of us have photos and family documents sitting around in boxes or on our phones, but what do we do with them?  This presentation will talk about how to decide which are the most important items, possible ways to organize them, preserve them (both physically and digitally), and what material you need to store them so that they are available for future generations.
